50 yard range REFURBISHMENT
The 50 yard range has been in service since the club opened at the Porter Corners Rd site in 1984. After 25 years of service the time had come for a major refurbishment. We decided to break the project into two phases, the overshot and the overhang (roofed portion). We tackled the overshot portion of the project first.
The board decided to engage a professional construction firm to replace the overshot protection system. Most shooting ranges do not have such features as our overshot protection system, but SaraSpa takes range safety very seriously. We believe the expense of installing systems engineered to prevent rounds from leaving our ranges is just part of responsible range management.
Getting Things Going
The overshot system used at SaraSpa is essentially wooden troughs filled with stone. Some overshot designs call for concrete - but we like stone. We have done extensive ballistics testing and the stone-filled trough will stop multiple high-power rifle impacts - in the same hole!
Requests for bids were sent to a number of local contractors. Special thanks to Scott Souza for his role as Project Manager. (The picture at right is not Scott, but it looks a lot like him - really). Scott defined the overshot requirements in sufficient detail to allow contractors to bid on the project.
Local Contractor Wins the Job
After receiving all the bids, the board decided on Cabin Creek Builders to perform the overshot refurbishment. Cabin Creek Builders is a local business run by Greenfield resident Mark Pepper. We were sure we made the right choice, because soon after the project started - Mark immediately impressed us with his construction knowledge and ideas on how the job could be completed most efficiently. If that were not enough - Mark and his team do very high quality work!
In-Process Photos
As the work progressed we tried to get as many photos as we could. Unfortunately, Mark and his team worked so quickly - it was hard to keep pace. Visit the Overshot Refurbishment Photo Page for some shots of Mark in action.
