Open House 2010
SaraSpa's Open Houses are loads of fun - and 2010 was no exception. Unfortunately, I have very little photographic evidence to document the fun. Its a long, involved story and I will spare you the details. The high-level view is:
- My baby girl (OK, she's 22, but she's my youngest daughter) went to study in a foreign land for a year. So - I was pretty bummed about that. Yeah, yeah, I know all the baby birds leave the nest sometime, blah, blah, blah,...Screw baby birds - I miss my daughter.
- The aforementioned daughter took the video camera I have used in years past to record the magic of our Open Houses. True, it is her camera - but that is a technicality.
- Some freak of digital technology caused me to lose the Open House pictures I took with my crummy "replacement" camera.
Luckily, SaraSpa Director extraordinaire Dave McBurnie had my back and took some photos of the key event of the the 2010 Open House - the first flag raising on our new flag pole. Thank you Dave.
Before getting into details, we wish to thank our great friends at Zack's Sports for sponsoring our Annual Newsletter.
Flag Raising
When you see Old Glory proudly flying above the entrance to SaraSpa, you are seeing the results of a team effort:
- The flag pole itself was generously donated by SaraSpa member Rory O'Connor.
- A number of people donated to the collection box to raise money for the flags and hardware.
- Friend of SaraSpa, Joseph Trimarchi, donated his expertise to weld the flagpole sections together.
- Dave McBurnie dug the "hole for the pole."
- A SaraSpa member, who wishes to remain anonymous, built the form for the foundation.
- Mark Pepper, of Cabin Creek Builders, supervised pouring of the foundation.
The flag raising was special for two reasons. First, it was September 11th and second, our flag pole is dedicated to veterans.
Our flag is raised for the first time, to the sound of "Reveille"...
Once the flag was raised, we lowered it to half-staff. We observed a moment of silence for those that had given their lives in service of their country. A bell was rung 3 times...
SaraSpa's own Mark Rosenzweig played "Taps" while the flag was at half-staff.
With the commemorative service over, we once again raised the flag to full staff. May she fly forever...
